More and more of us are concerned with reducing the appearance of open pores than wrinkles. While our initial pore size is determined by genetics, they do naturally become larger over time due to the fact there's less elasticity in the skin to help them spring back. Instead of dreaming about smaller pores, there are things that we can do to help minimise their appearance and smooth out an uneven texture.
Pores appear larger when dirt and grime clog them. Cleansing is essential as it is the first step to minimising pores. Make sure to use gentle ingredients in your cleanser, as the harsher the product, the more it will strip the skin of it’s natural oils. The pores will only excrete more oil to combat this, undoing all your hard-cleansing work!
Exfoliation will help to keep your face clean as it removes dead skin cells which fill pores and create a dull looking complexion. Ingredients to look out for are salicylic, lactic or glycolic acid. These are brilliant at removing dead cells and to stimulate cell turnover. Just make sure the percentages of these ingredients are low to make sure it is safe and gentle for the skin.
Softly does it!
When cleansing, exfoliating and applying product to your face, make sure you’re not pulling the skin too much. Treat it gently!
Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise
Moisturising the skin is so important if you suffer with enlarged pores. The dryer the skin gets, the more it will make oil to resolve the issue. One product to try is Pevonia’s new Micro-Pores Refine Cream, which is light-textured and features an ingredient called pseudoalteromonas ferment peptide extract! Quite a mouthful, but it’s been proven to decrease sebum production and accumulation. Another brilliant ingredient is biochanin A, known for regulating sebum and tightening pores.
We all know how important drinking enough water is, but it has an effect on our pores too! It will help to shrink the pores by plumping up the surrounding skin.
Have a Facial
Of course we would say this, but having one on a regular basis will improve the look of open pores and uneven texture. Professional extraction and exfoliation really deep cleans the pores.
Please, please, always wear an SPF. It’s such an important part of your skincare routine as radiation from UV rays breaks down our elastin and collagen. This then expands the pores and ages the skin.
Try Medical Microdermabrasion
Having a treatment in the salon such as Medical Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates the outer layers of skin. It's a safe and controlled method of skin resurfacing which can be used to solve a wide range of skin concerns on both the face and body.
